In the treatment of addictions, the term “dual diagnosis” means that the patient is also suffering from another mental disorder, such as bipolar disorder, ADHD, or a personality disorder, which certainly complicates recovery. If the patient is treated for the addiction, but the underlying disorder is not addressed, a relapse into drug or alcohol abuse is very likely.
