Illness and Recovery by Stu Perr

I have Hepatitis C. The fact that I am a recovering addict and also have a secondary illness aside from my addiction places me in an interesting position. Knowing that my Hepatitis C is a direct consequence of my active addiction further emphasizes my need to remain in recovery. The down side of course is the treatment I must endure for my Hepatitis C. This is something I am currently doing and it is truly a test of my commitment to my peace of mind and my willingness to stay clean and sober. I am brutally aware of the fact that this disease is rampant among recovering addicts; the fact that we are a community held together by a common bond brings great comfort to me not to mention the support that is available. I write this not only as a way of venting my own thoughts but also with the hope of maybe reaching another who can identify and relate to my journey, I believe that I would not be able to do this alone.

When I say I am grateful for all that I have this also includes the opportunity to experience life on life’s terms. And, this also includes the fact that I have Hepatitis C and that I am a recovering addict. I feel blessed to be able to help others and that I have this day to be alive and free.
